List of WHOIS servers

Whois servers can be used to automatically obtain details about the owner of any given domain name. Due to data mining restrictions, and the fact that no one WHOIS server contains a definitive list of all domain names in the world, it is often necessary to requery several WHOIS servers for the same information. The three largest WHOIS servers are as follows whois.ripe.net, whois.crsnic.net, and whois.networksolutions.com.

Chapter 12, section 4 of the book '>Network programming in .NET' (Buy at Amazon UK) (Buy at Amazon US) demonstrates how to query different types of WHOIS servers, and how to interpret the returned data, which differs depending on the implementation of the WHOIS server.
